Longtime Aston commissioner Jim McGinn dies at 68
Aug 1, 2018There has not yet been a determination or announcement about the cause of death; however, McGinn had been experiencing health issues for the past few years. He was 68.The longest-serving commissioner in the township’s history, McGinn served on the board for 39 years. The Republican first ran for the board of commissioners in 1979 and served as both president and vice president of the board as well as on numerous committees.“Having served with Jimmy McGinn on the board of commissioners for 18 years, I can tell you he was a true Aston Township icon,” said commissioners Vice President Mike Higgins. “Next to his family, Aston Township was the most important thing in his life. He lived and breathed this township and he was always there to help a resident in need.” AdvertisementMcGinn is widely credited with the construction of the Community Center on Concord Road as well as the Aston Township Veterans Memorial Garden located at Five Points.In 2009, during the dedication of the memorial, Diane Holefelder, currently a magisterial district judge, said McGinn called her in 2000 and suggested a memorial be erected at the Five Points site where a gas station stood for many years. A committee was formed and much hard work and dedication was invested in the success of the memorial.At the time of the dedication, McGinn remarked: “My brothers and I knew three of the people listed on this memorial personally and grew up with them. Today is a day many of us have been looking forward to.”McGinn was a loyal supporter of local sports, and is an honored member of the Aston Township Sports Hall of Fame. For years, he provided poinsettia flowers to the senior citizens at their annual Christmas luncheon and sponsored pictures with Santa for 5th ward children and their pets.
